If it's just a vague CTD without any error messages, and without you doing something consisent within the game to cause it crash, you'll be hard pressed to find a solution.
BUT, here are a few common fixes to various things:
    1) Disable the autosave. I know this is risky with CTDs, but it has been known to solve problems
    2) Run as admin
    3) Make sure game is fully patched
    4) Make sure your computer is not overheating (This is actually quite common on newer rigs, since the software only utilizes ONE of the CPU cores). Most laptops have an automatic safety built in that causes either a CTD or a full shut down in the CPU gets too hot.

bbiron's suggestions are each good ones. Since its also a Steam copy, you should also try VCing (verifying cache). Other things to check would be ARE you able to identify exactly when it crashes.. insofar as there might be any pattern? Have you changed anything on your computer software wise or setting wise? Have you (as indirectly suggested by bbiron) cleaned your PC out ...ever? lol

I found the problem, the game doesn't handle having the window closed.
I used to miss End Turn and it would minimize the screen when I clicked because of dual monitors, so when I did my latest session without it closing by accident it was stable. I then decided to close the widow for 5 minutes and reopen it only for it to crash.
    Thanks anyway.

Posing a limited comment in a four year old thread is not going to get you any assistance or advice. I suggest you go to this link and post a support request, after reading through some of the info threads.

Total War Rome 2 Keeps Crashing

Re: Rome Total War keeps crashing! I have the same problem, but at the main menu the mouse leaves a permanent trail behind it. My experience with medieval total war showed me a couple of problems.
