I am trying to decide which of these 2 games both set in the colonial era i have never played a total war game before besides the empire demo and need to know which one is better, people have said.

I'm playing Empire right now with Darthmod version 8.0.1 and the Additional Units mod. I thought the latest patch of Darthmod was supposed to fix this but appearently not. The Ottomans and Swedish keep spamming 1 army units and a turn can legit take 30 minutes. I've downloaded/converted (from.rar to.exe, via The Unarchiver) DarthModEmpirev8.0Platinum.exe and DarthModEmpirev8.0.1PatchPlatinumFinal.exe. They're both sitting in my Downloads folder. I have (of course) Empire: Total War – Gold Edition in applications.
